Incident Overview
Three people have died after a yacht sank near South Ballina on the New South Wales coast in Australia. Two of the victims were volunteer marine rescuers who rushed to help during rough sea conditions. A third man, believed to be in his mid fifties, also lost his life after the yacht broke apart near a break wall.
Rescue Operation Turns Fatal
Emergency services received a call at 18:15 on Monday after a yacht ran into trouble close to the break wall. A Marine Rescue NSW team of six volunteers responded quickly and headed out to the scene.
While crossing the Ballina Bar, their rescue boat overturned in dangerous water conditions. Four crew members managed to reach the shore with minor injuries. Authorities later confirmed that two rescuers, aged 78 and 62, did not survive.
Search and Recovery Efforts
Search teams later found the body of the third man on the sand. He was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident, according to police. A helicopter recovered the body of the 78 year old rescuer, while the 62 year old was found onshore.
Officials called off the search early Tuesday after confirming all individuals involved had been located.
Yacht Damage and Investigation
Police reported that the yacht struck the break wall and broke apart before sinking. Investigators are now working to understand how the vessel ended up so close to the dangerous area.
Diving teams may return later in the week to gather further evidence.
Tribute to Volunteers
Marine Rescue NSW and local police praised the bravery of the volunteers. Officials said the conditions at sea were extremely dangerous and described the event as a tragic loss for the close knit rescue community.
A spokesperson highlighted that the volunteers were responding to protect lives when the accident happened.
Community Impact
Residents in Ballina expressed shock over the incident, saying the tragedy would deeply affect the local community.
