Senate Standoff in Manila
A Philippine senator linked to the former president Rodrigo Duterte drug war took refuge inside the Senate building in Manila after law enforcement officers attempted to detain him. Ronald Dela Rosa, a key figure in the anti drugs campaign, entered Senate protection as officers moved in to arrest him.
Security personnel from the National Bureau of Investigation followed him inside the building. The situation escalated quickly, but he remained inside Senate custody and avoided arrest.
Charges Linked to Drug War Killings
Dela Rosa faces accusations tied to the deaths of at least 32 people between 2016 and 2018. Authorities describe him as an indirect co perpetrator in the controversial anti drugs operations carried out during Duterte’s presidency. The campaign led to thousands of deaths of suspected drug users and dealers.
ICC Arrest Warrant Context
The International Criminal Court unsealed an arrest warrant connected to the case. Former president Rodrigo Duterte is already in ICC custody in The Hague after his arrest in March 2025. The case continues to draw global attention due to the scale of alleged human rights violations.
Security Footage Shows Chase Inside Senate
Footage shown to lawmakers captured agents pursuing Dela Rosa through stairways and corridors inside the Senate building. The chase ended in a standoff after he reached protected Senate areas.
Official Response to Arrest Attempt
Officials from the National Bureau of Investigation later stated that they would not proceed with an arrest while Dela Rosa remained under Senate protection. The situation was brought under control after several hours without further escalation.
