Conviction in New York Federal Court
A jury in New York has found a US citizen guilty over his role in running what prosecutors describe as a secret Chinese police station in Manhattan’s Chinatown. The case relates to activity carried out in early 2022.The defendant, Lu Jianwang, also known as Harry Lu, is 64 years old and lives in New York.
Allegations Linked to Chinese Ministry of Public Security
Prosecutors said Lu helped operate the station on behalf of China’s Ministry of Public Security. The office was located above a restaurant in Chinatown and reportedly functioned as an overseas outpost.
Authorities claim the station was used to monitor and target Chinese dissidents living in the United States. FBI officials said it supported political goals linked to the Chinese state.
Co Accused and Evidence Destruction
A second individual, Chen Jinping, admitted guilt earlier in a related conspiracy charge involving acting for the Chinese government. He is waiting for sentencing.
Prosecutors also stated that both individuals deleted messages linked to a Chinese official after learning about the investigation.
Shutdown and Investigation
The FBI launched an investigation into the Manhattan location, leading to its closure in late 2022. The office had operated on a floor above a ramen shop.
Officials believe similar overseas stations exist in multiple countries.China has denied these claims, saying such locations only provide administrative support services.
