Emotional Milestone in Recovery Journey
A Sydney woman who suffered severe injuries in a shark attack has taken an encouraging step in her recovery after briefly waking from an induced coma more than a week after the incident.
Leah Stewart, 34, was swimming at Coogee Beach on June 13 when a shark attacked her near the shoreline. The attack left her with multiple bite wounds on her arms and legs and caused significant blood loss.
Emergency responders rushed Stewart to the hospital in critical condition. Doctors immediately began treatment and performed several surgeries to save her life. During one of the procedures, surgeons had to amputate her arm because of the extent of her injuries.
Family Shares Positive Update
After days of uncertainty, Stewart’s family received welcome news. Her brother, Joshua Stewart, revealed that doctors reduced her medication so she could briefly regain consciousness.
During that emotional moment, Stewart told her mother and partner, who were at her bedside, “I love you.” She also asked whether her daughter was safe and doing well.
Joshua described the development as a remarkable and emotional breakthrough for the entire family.
He said the progress came much sooner than expected and gave everyone renewed hope for her recovery.
Several More Surgeries Ahead
Although Stewart has shown signs of improvement, doctors continue to monitor her closely in intensive care.
Over the past week, she underwent five days of surgeries. Medical teams have already scheduled additional procedures in the coming weeks as part of her long recovery process.
Her family remains hopeful and grateful for the progress she has made so far. However, they acknowledge that significant challenges still lie ahead.
Shark Attack Happened Near Shore
Stewart, who works as a teacher, visited Coogee Beach for a morning swim on the day of the attack. Reports indicate that she was swimming close to shore when the shark struck.
The incident shocked local residents and beachgoers, especially because Coogee Beach is one of Sydney’s most popular coastal destinations.
Rising Number of Shark Attacks in Australia
Australia has recorded several shark attacks this year, raising concerns about beach safety.
In January, four shark attacks occurred within just two days. One of those incidents involved a young boy at a Sydney beach. He later died from his injuries in the hospital.
Last month, two separate fatal shark attacks occurred in different parts of the country. A man lost his life while spearfishing in Queensland after a shark attacked him. In Western Australia, 38 year old father Steven Mattaboni also died following an encounter with a large shark estimated to be about four meters long.
Hope Remains Strong
Despite the severity of her injuries, Leah Stewart’s ability to wake up and communicate with loved ones marks an important milestone. Her recovery journey is far from over, but her family believes this positive step offers hope for the months ahead.
