Acclaimed screenwriter Jack Thorne is set to present a profound new interpretation of William Golding’s seminal novel, Lord of the Flies, in an upcoming BBC series. Thorne, who first encountered the story through a borrowed—and somewhat illicit—copy from his mother, describes the book as leaving a “profound scar.” His adaptation aims to move beyond the common perception of the story as a simple tale of inherent malevolence. Beyond "The Evilness of Boys" Thorne challenges the idea that Lord of the Flies is merely shorthand for the “evilness of boys.” He sees deeper complexity within Golding’s work. For Thorne, the novel presents a “remarkably tender portrait” of young boys lost in an uncontrollable situation. This perspective aligns with his celebrated work on masculinity and violence, exemplified by his award-winning series Adolescence. Understanding the "Epitome of Evil" Thorne’s understanding of the characters evolved dramatically from childhood to adulthood. He initially saw the character Jack, the instigator of the island’s hunts, as the pure “epitome of evil.” Now, Thorne views Jack as a deeply complicated figure—a boy who is “as loving as he is hateful.” This nuanced understanding forms the heart of the new adaptation. A Structural "Relay Race" of Perspectives The four-part series uses a unique narrative structure to explore this complexity. Each episode bears the name of a key character, offering a deep dive into their individual perspective as the island descends into chaos. Thorne describes this approach as a “relay race,” moving from the rational Piggy, to the conflicted Jack, to the sensitive Simon, and finally to the elected leader Ralph. This structure allows viewers to literally “look into the eyes of someone that is fighting themselves.” Fostering Empathy and Conversation Director Marc Munden emphasizes that while the series does not excuse the characters' bad behaviour, it seeks to explain it. The team hopes to show how things can “go badly wrong,” reflecting a world where “confused little boys,” now in the guise of men, still create chaos. Thorne further envisions the series as an “empathy box,” sparking conversations between young viewers and their parents about navigating the difficulties of adolescence, much like his own childhood talks about TV dramas. A Challenging and Serious Production Filmed on location in Malaysia with a large cast of children, Munden admits the shoot was “chaos.” However, he praises the young actors, particularly the four leads, for taking their roles “very seriously.” The result aims to transform a story often seen as brutal and pessimistic into one that reveals, as Munden notes, a “lot of love” in its character portrayals.

In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, former US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have announced a comprehensive new trade agreement. The deal, finalized during a phone call between the two leaders, aims to reset a strained economic relationship and marks a major shift in global trade alliances. Key Terms of the Historic Agreement The agreement centers on mutual concessions. The United States will dramatically reduce its tariffs on Indian goods. Previously, US tariffs on Indian imports stood at 50%, the highest for any Asian nation. Under the new deal, these will be lowered to 18%. Notably, a 25% penalty tariff linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil will be completely eliminated. In return, India has made substantial commitments. Prime Minister Modi agreed to reduce its own trade barriers and non-tariff obstacles to zero for US goods. Furthermore, India will stop purchasing Russian oil, pivoting instead to buy significantly more energy from the United States and potentially Venezuela. India also committed to purchasing over $500 billion worth of American goods, including energy, technology, agriculture, and coal products. Strategic Timing and Global Context This announcement comes less than a week after India and the European Union sealed their own landmark trade deal, ending nearly 20 years of negotiations. Analysts view the swift US-India pact as a strategic move by Washington to maintain its influence. Terry Haines of Pangaea Policy called it "an answer to those thinking the EU is flanking or gaining speed on the US on trade." The US-India trade relationship had been under severe strain since August, when the high US tariffs caused Indian exports to America to plummet. India had been actively seeking other partnerships in response. Reactions and Market Implications Prime Minister Modi expressed delight at the agreement on social media, thanking Trump "on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India." He emphasized the benefit of the world's two largest democracies working together. While markets are expected to react positively, not all responses are favorable. A coalition of 800 U.S. small businesses, "We Pay the Tariffs," criticized the deal. Their director noted that pre-tariff rates were around 2.5%, meaning the new 18% rate "locks in a rate six times higher than what we were paying a year ago," calling it a "permanent tax hike." The deal represents a fundamental realignment, strengthening US-India ties while pulling New Delhi away from Russian energy dependence. It sets the stage for a new chapter in trans-Pacific trade and geopolitics.
