Tensions between the United States and Iran have increased after both sides launched new military actions. The US says the Strait of Hormuz remains open, while Iran claims it has closed the important waterway.
The latest conflict began after Iranian forces targeted a ship travelling through the strait. Iran said the vessel followed an unauthorised route. In response, the US launched strikes on more than 140 locations across Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major global trade route. Millions of barrels of oil pass through the area every day, making any disruption a concern for international markets.
Iran Attempts to Control the Key Waterway
Iran announced that it had closed the strait until further notice. The move came as the country tried to increase control over the strategic shipping route.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps expanded its military actions on Sunday. It launched missile and drone attacks against US bases and American allies in the region.
Iran claimed it attacked a US base in Jordan. Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain reported that they faced missile and drone threats from Iran.
US Central Command has not yet provided further details about the reported attack in Jordan.
Regional Allies Face Growing Security Risks
The recent attacks increased concerns among countries in the Gulf region. Qatar, which has helped with ceasefire discussions, had avoided attacks since April. The UAE had not faced similar attacks since May.
The United States later announced another round of strikes against Iran. Officials said the operation aimed to reduce Iran’s ability to target commercial ships and civilian vessels travelling through the Strait of Hormuz.
Ceasefire Efforts Face New Challenges
The renewed fighting has created problems for efforts to restore peace. A temporary ceasefire plan from last month aimed to reopen the strait and support a permanent solution.
US President Donald Trump said Iranian attacks ended the ceasefire. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of breaking the agreement.
Despite the accusations, Trump said negotiations would continue. International mediators are also working to bring both sides back to talks.
Iran Says Tanker Attacks Were a Mistake
Reports from US media said Iranian officials told American representatives that recent tanker attacks happened by mistake. Iran blamed an internal group for the incidents.
The latest escalation followed a statement from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. The group said it launched a naval cruise missile at a ship that travelled through a restricted route.
The situation remains uncertain as both countries continue military operations and diplomatic efforts. The Strait of Hormuz continues to be a major focus because any prolonged closure could affect global energy supplies.
