Senator Shares Details About
US Senator Mitch McConnell has revealed that he will not return to the Senate floor yet after recovering from a fall and a mild case of pneumonia.
The 84 year old Republican senator from Kentucky shared his first public statement after weeks of questions about his health. He explained that doctors are monitoring his recovery and advised him to continue rehabilitation before returning to work.
McConnell said he briefly lost consciousness after falling and was taken to the hospital. Doctors carried out several tests to understand what caused the incident.
He confirmed that medical checks found no broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors, or internal bleeding.
Long Term Effects of Childhood Polio
McConnell also discussed his childhood battle with polio. He contracted the disease when he was two years old, which caused paralysis in part of his left leg.
The senator said the effects of polio have created ongoing mobility challenges. He added that managing these difficulties has become harder with age.
McConnell credited his recovery from polio to years of physical rehabilitation and the support of his mother, who encouraged him to regain his ability to walk.
Recovery Continues at Rehabilitation Center
During his hospital stay, McConnell also developed a mild case of pneumonia. His office confirmed that he has now moved from hospital care to a rehabilitation facility.
In his statement, McConnell said many people from his generation find it difficult to talk about the challenges that come with aging.
He admitted that his recovery process is taking time and said he would follow his doctors’ advice before returning to Senate voting sessions.
Questions Surround Health Absence
The senator’s absence from public duties led to widespread speculation about his condition. A photo released by his office showed McConnell with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, holding a newspaper.
The image came after criticism of Chao’s trip to China while her husband was recovering. Chinese officials confirmed that Chao met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing on 17 June, only days after McConnell entered the hospital.
McConnell’s latest statement aims to address concerns about his health while explaining that his return to the Senate will depend on his recovery progress.
