Security Guard Defies the Odds
Rescue teams achieved an incredible breakthrough after pulling a man alive from the rubble eight days after a powerful earthquake struck Venezuela. The survivor, identified as Gil, amazed rescuers by escaping without any serious injuries despite spending more than 100 hours trapped beneath collapsed concrete.
The emotional rescue marked one of the most remarkable survival stories to emerge from the disaster. Rescue workers from several countries worked day and night to bring him to safety.
Rescuers Hear a Faint Cry for Help
Allan Madrigal, a paramedic with the Costa Rican Red Cross, first heard Gil calling for help while searching through the debris. At first, he doubted what he heard and asked another rescuer to listen carefully.
Once his teammate confirmed the faint voice, rescue crews immediately focused all their efforts on reaching the trapped survivor.
Madrigal later described the discovery as one of the most emotional moments of the rescue operation.
How Gil Survived Beneath the Rubble
Gil was working as a security guard when the twin earthquakes hit. At the time, he was inside a small concrete security booth located in the basement parking area next to the Galerias Playa Grande shopping mall in Catia La Mar.
The booth likely saved his life. Instead of collapsing completely, it formed a protective space around him. That shield protected him from nearly 140 tonnes of fallen concrete and debris.
Rescuers later revealed that Gil told them he had not even suffered a crushed fingernail during the terrifying ordeal.
International Teams Worked Around the Clock
Emergency crews from Venezuela, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Portugal, and the United States joined the difficult rescue mission.
Medical teams kept Gil hydrated by giving him water and connecting him to an intravenous drip while engineers and firefighters carefully removed the debris above him.
The rescue remained extremely dangerous. Several access tunnels collapsed during the operation, forcing crews to rebuild safe pathways without putting Gil or themselves at greater risk.
Despite these setbacks, rescuers continued working with determination.
First Visual Contact Brings New Hope
After days of careful digging, rescue workers finally established visual contact with Gil.
They lowered a small camera through the rubble, allowing firefighters to see him for the first time since the earthquake.
Video footage captured a Chilean firefighter asking Gil to turn his head toward the camera. That moment confirmed he remained conscious and gave rescue teams renewed hope that they could complete the operation successfully.
An Emotional Rescue
After more than eight days trapped underground, rescuers finally pulled Gil to safety.
Medical teams immediately examined him and confirmed that he had escaped the disaster in remarkably good condition.
