Background of the Case
The widow of a businessman has called for support from the Indian government as she prepares to take legal action against Scottish authorities. She claims her husband suffered severe damage to his life and reputation after being wrongly linked to a murder that took place in 1997 in Glasgow.
Sougat Mukherjee, a businessman based in India, was later identified by police as a suspect in the killing of Tracey Wilde. The accusation came many years after the crime, and it triggered a long legal and personal struggle for him and his family.
How the Allegations Affected His Life
Sougat Mukherjee was informed in 2014 that he was wanted in connection with the case in Scotland. At that time, he was 44 years old and living a stable professional life with his family.
After the allegation surfaced, his situation changed rapidly. He became involved in a lengthy extradition process, which placed significant pressure on his personal and professional life. According to his family, his reputation suffered heavily during this period.
His wife, Sapna Mukherjee, says the impact was long lasting. She believes the public accusation led to emotional distress and severe depression, which affected his health in the following years.
Clearing of His Name
Years later, developments in forensic evidence, including DNA findings, helped clear his name. However, his family states that the damage had already been done by that point.
Family’s Legal and Political Appeal
Sapna Mukherjee is now seeking compensation and has requested an official inquiry into how the case was handled.Sougat Mukherjee passed away on 17 January 2023 in Mumbai due to complications from liver cirrhosis.
Sapna Mukherjee said her focus is now on seeking accountability and ensuring her husband’s experience is formally examined.
Details of the Original Crime
