A proposed A$1.5 billion Trump Tower development on Queensland’s Gold Coast has been cancelled just months after its announcement. The decision follows concerns over the Trump brand’s reputation in Australia and ongoing global tensions linked to the Iran conflict.
Developer and Trump Organization Trade Blame
Altus Property Group, the Australian developer behind the project, said the partnership ended because the Trump brand had become “toxic” in the local market. Chief executive David Young said global political issues and reputational concerns made the deal unworkable.
He added that the project would still move forward, but potentially under a different luxury brand.
The Trump Organization rejected this explanation. A spokesperson said Altus Property Group failed to meet key financial obligations under the agreement. The company described the claim about global events as an attempt to shift attention away from contractual issues.
Planning, Scale, and Features
Eric Trump had previously described the development as a major expansion of the brand into Australia, bringing a high end luxury experience to the Gold Coast.
Local Reaction and Planning Status
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the council had not received a formal development application for the project. A petition opposing the project gained more than 120,000 signatures, while a supporting petition attracted around 3,600 signatures.
