Investigators Discover Mass
Authorities in northern California have uncovered the remains of 117 dogs at a self-described no-kill animal rescue facility. Many of the animals appeared to have died from gunshot wounds, according to investigators.
The shocking discovery happened at Miranda’s Rescue Animal Sanctuary in Fortuna, California. Law enforcement officers searched the property after receiving reports of possible animal cruelty and fraud.
During the excavation, investigators found several burial sites containing dog remains in different stages of decomposition. They also recovered around 600 dog collars from the property.
Hundreds of Animals Remain
The investigation began in April after officials received credible information about alleged animal abuse, fraud, and conspiracy linked to the rescue facility.
Sheriff William Honsal said the sanctuary had taken in around 900 animals since the beginning of 2025. However, records showed only 116 adoptions during that period. More than 700 animals remain unaccounted for.
The case gained attention after a neighbor reportedly entered the property in April and discovered what appeared to be buried dogs.
Gunshot Evidence Found
Investigators searched two large excavation areas on the 50-acre property and found the intact remains of 117 dogs. They also recovered 21 dog skulls and hundreds of additional bones.
Authorities X-rayed 70 of the recovered bodies. The scans revealed bullet fragments in many of the remains. Initial examinations suggest that gunshot wounds caused the deaths of several animals.
Officials also discovered six loose microchips near the burial sites. Most of the deceased dogs had microchips, and investigators are now analyzing the data to identify the animals.
Barn May Have Been Used to Kill Dogs
During the search, investigators located a barn where they believe many of the dogs may have been killed. They also found additional remains in another area of the property.
The owner of the sanctuary, Shannon Miranda, has denied wrongdoing and asked the public to consider all the facts before reaching conclusions. She stated that some reports have presented an incomplete picture of the situation.
At this time, authorities have not filed criminal charges against Miranda. The investigation remains active as officials continue to gather evidence and identify the animals found on the property.
Investigation Continues
The discovery has shocked animal lovers across California and raised serious concerns about oversight at animal rescue facilities. Authorities say they will continue examining the evidence and determining what happened to the hundreds of missing animals.
