Thai authorities are investigating possible safety violations after a devastating fire at a Bangkok bar killed at least 30 people and injured more than 70 others.
The fire broke out late on Sunday at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, a live music venue in Bangkok. Officials are examining whether negligence, poor emergency planning, and unsafe decorations contributed to the tragedy.
Early reports suggest the fire started near the stage, possibly because of an electrical short circuit involving an air conditioning unit. The flames spread quickly across the venue, leaving many customers unable to escape.
Locked Doors and Poor Emergency Exits Under Investigation
Survivors said the bar had limited lighting and unclear emergency exit signs before the fire. Some visitors reported that finding the restrooms required moving through a confusing path inside the venue.
A fire safety expert who inspected the scene found that a door near the restrooms was locked during the incident. Investigators also discovered that furniture and other objects partly blocked the main entrance doors.
Many customers reportedly moved toward the back of the building while trying to escape the flames. However, some became trapped because they could not find a clear exit route.
Experts believe proper emergency signs and unlocked escape doors could have helped people leave the building faster.
Flammable Decorations Increased Fire Risk
Investigators found that the venue used highly flammable materials for decoration. Plastic flowers around the stage and combustible foam on the ceiling may have helped the fire spread rapidly.
Survivors said the stage became covered in flames within seconds after the fire started. A local music group performing that night also lost two members in the incident.
Fire experts warned that smoke may have caused many deaths before the flames reached victims. Burning materials can release dangerous gases, including carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, which can quickly become fatal in enclosed spaces.
Venue Registration Raises Safety Questions
Authorities confirmed that the bar was registered as a restaurant with live music instead of an entertainment venue. Because of this classification, the building may not have been required to use certain fire-resistant materials.
Bangkok officials are now reviewing safety rules for restaurants and entertainment locations. The investigation will focus on whether the venue followed existing fire protection regulations.
Reports also revealed that the owner previously operated another pub in Thailand’s Yasothon province. That location was destroyed by fire in 2019, although no deaths were reported because the incident happened during daytime hours.
Investigation Continues After Deadly Bangkok Fire
Officials have identified most of the victims, while dozens of injured people remain under medical care. Authorities are continuing to collect evidence and question witnesses to determine who may be responsible for the safety failures.
The tragedy has increased concerns about fire safety standards in entertainment venues across Thailand and highlighted the importance of clear exits, safe building materials, and emergency preparation.
