On March 2, 2020, Covid-19 was first identified in Indonesia when a dancing instructor and her mother tested positive after interacting with an infected person.

Even though Indonesia is a huge country with thousands of islands, the disease spread to all 34 provinces, including Java, in less than a month.

With over 151 million inhabitants, Java is the most populous island in the world. Java, along with its crowded capital, Jakarta, became a focal point for the pandemic’s spread.

At initially, Indonesian health personnel fought this new disease with few resources. According to one analysis, almost 1,500 Indonesian healthcare professionals have died from disease by July 2021.
