ISLAMABAD The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) warned on Friday that Punjab and Sindh’s water supply is seriously threatened by the rapidly declining water levels in the Tarbela and Mangla reservoirs.
IRSA emphasized in a formal letter to provincial irrigation agencies, as published by The News on Saturday, that while depletion to dead levels is normal, it may cause interruptions to Punjab’s and Sindh’s water supply, which has already seen shortages.
Reservoirs will reach dead levels in early March, according to an earlier operational assessment by the IRSA Advisory Committee (IAC), which is what led to the alert.
According to an official notice from IRSA, between October 1, 2024, and February 28, 2025, Sindh saw a 14% deficit and Punjab a 20% deficiency.
