More than ten years after the largest political-religious party’s registration was revoked by the now-deposed government, Bangladesh restored it on Sunday, enabling it to participate in elections.
The Supreme Court allowed Jamaat-e-Islami to be officially classified as a political party with the Election Commission after overturning a decision to terminate its registration.
Commission attorney Towhidul Islam told AFP, “The Election Commission is directed to deal with the registration of that party in accordance with law.”
Shishir Monir, a lawyer for the Jamaat-e-Islami party, claimed that the Supreme Court’s ruling would permit a “democratic, inclusive and multi-party system” in the 170 million-person nation with a majority of Muslims.
