ISLAMABAD: Omar Ayub, the leader of the opposition, demanded that a parliamentary committee be established to select a new chief election commissioner (CEC) and two members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). However, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq rejected this request, stating that the prime minister and the opposition leader must first consult before the process can begin.
In response to Ayub’s request, speaker Ayaz Sadiq replied in a letter that “the parliamentary committee cannot be formed until the prime minister and opposition leader have finished their consultation process.”
Omar Ayub formally asked the speaker of the lower house to convene the committee and start the appointment process earlier on Thursday.
Two senators and four members of the National Assembly made up his six opposition nominees.
