STOCKHOLM: Scientists have cautioned that a new nuclear arms race has been sparked by the majority of nuclear-armed nations’ continuous modernization of their arsenals in 2024.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), last year was devoted to “upgrading existing weapons and adding newer versions” by nuclear powers such as the United States and Russia, which hold around 90% of the world’s nuclear arsenal.
The total number of warheads has decreased since the end of the Cold War because new warheads have been deployed more slowly than old ones have been removed.
However, SIPRI cautioned that in the upcoming years, the trend was probably going to reverse.
