By a decision of 6 to 3, the court ruled that the 2023 law that prohibited minors from receiving medicines like puberty blockers did not constitute discrimination.
A doctor who prescribes transition drugs, three transgender teens from Tennessee, and their parents had claimed the state’s ban discriminated against them based on their sex, in violation of the US Constitution’s guarantee of equal treatment under the law.
In the case known as United States v. Skrmetti, the court addressed transgender healthcare for the first time.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the ruling, stating that transgender people are not subject to discrimination under SB1.
He also stated that: “Tennessee concluded that there is an ongoing debate among medical experts regarding the risks and benefits associated with administering”
