A proposed agreement between Rwandan and Democratic Republic of the Congo officials aims to put an end to decades of violence.
The US and Qatar mediated the agreement, which calls for the “disengagement, disarmament and conditional integration” of armed groups engaged in conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Widespread claims that Rwanda supports the M23, one of those organizations that has taken control of a sizable portion of the region this year, are denied.
In order to stop future flare-ups, it also contains provisions for a cooperative security mechanism. Next week, the peace agreement is anticipated to be formally signed.
