The Punjab administration, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, on Friday mandated that motorbikes acquire fitness certifications, a condition that had previously only been applied to private cars.
In an exclusive interview with SAMAA TV, Secretary Muhammad Hassan Ahsan of the Punjab Provincial Transport Authority (PPTA) acknowledged that the development is a result of changes made to the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965.
Mr. Ahsan claims that the updated ordinance intends to include motorcycles under the regulatory purview of mechanical and emission criteria. “Motorcycles will now also have to undergo regular fitness checks, just like private cars,” he added, adding that this policy is an essential step in tackling the declining quality of the air in urban areas.
