SWAT: Concerns about administrative errors, illicit riverbank mining, and postponed rescue efforts that might have made the situation worse have surfaced as the death toll from the Swat River catastrophe has risen to 12.
On Friday, 17 members of a Sialkot family were having a picnic close to the bank when they were washed away by an unexpected surge in the Swat River. Videos of the family stranded on a quickly dwindling island of land, frantically pleading for aid for almost an hour with no immediate relief in sight, went viral on social media.
Twelve victims have been found so far, including the body of a kid who was discovered near Charsadda on Sunday. One individual is still missing, and the search is still ongoing.
