According to an investigation, National Grid, the company that controls the substation that serves Heathrow, has known about an issue since 2018 but has not taken action to address it.
According to the research, there were many chances to fix the electrical components at the North Hyde substation that were impacted by moisture, but maintenance was consistently put off.
Heathrow told the news that it expected National Grid to “take accountability for those failings” and that it “could and should” have stopped the fire.
“Those failings that resulted in significant damage and loss for Heathrow and our airlines,” said a spokeswoman.
Despite claiming that such incidents were “rare” and that Britain has “one of the most reliable networks in the world,” National Grid said it had taken action after the fire on March 20.
