ISLAMABAD: On Friday, a multi-party opposition conference called for a new charter of democracy to “restore” the Constitution and democracy while warning that the country’s political space was rapidly dwindling and accusing the government of violating and stifling dissent.
Senior politician Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar stated at a news conference after the conclusion of Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan’s (TTAP) two-day multi-party convention that “the opposition [of this country] is being deliberately cornered and denied political space.”
He asserted that while economic pressures were pushing the business class overseas, the state was violating the fundamental freedom to assemble by preventing opposition meetings.
Khokhar emphasized that unemployment had skyrocketed to 20% and that 45% of the people lived below the poverty line.
