ISLAMABAD Following intense rains and India’s release of water into the Sutlej and Ravi rivers, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued alerts about the rising levels in both rivers, forcing over 150,000 people to relocate to safer places.
Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from Bahawalnagar, Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalpur, and Vehari by the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in response to early warnings.
Hundreds of villages on the three rivers’ embankments have been evacuated.
Shortly after the first advisories, the NDMA reported that roughly 40,000 people had already moved independently. To protect people and property, emergency reaction teams were sent in and all relevant departments were put on high alert.
