A large explosion rattled a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) training center in Irvine, California during training on Wednesday, injuring at least 16 persons, according to American media reports.
According to KTLA5 and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the explosion echoed across the Jerry Crowe Regional Tactical Training Facility in Irvine soon before 1pm.
The explosion occurred as the OCSD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team was conducting a combined training exercise with a bomb squad, according to police.
The blast injured 16 SWAT Team members, 15 of whom were brought by ambulance to local hospitals for treatment, and one who was able to self-transport.
The specific extent of everyone’s injuries is unknown, but KTLA5 reported that some individuals suffered non-life-threatening wounds to the legs and back, with one person requiring surgery.
