ISLAMABAD: Justice Athar Minallah of the Supreme Court has argued that there is “no substantive reason” to deny the public the right to watch court proceedings, thus live streaming Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s court appearances in the NAB amendment case is not illegal.
This was said by the judge of the supreme court in a dissenting opinion on Wednesday in response to the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s request for live streaming of the hearing in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) amendment case.
In a thorough ruling last week, the Supreme Court declared that political “point-scoring” could occur when judicial procedures involving politicians are televised. On the other hand, Justice Minallah disapproved of the majority 4-1 ruling.Since August of last year, Khan has been detained in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail following his sentencing in the Toshakhana case. The PTI founder is still incarcerated because of his conviction in the iddat case, even though he was given relief in many cases after being ousted from office in April 2022.
