Former President Joseph Kabila’s immunity has been revoked by the senate of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, opening the door for his prosecution for allegedly supporting rebels in the east.
Citing a “substantial body of documents, testimony and material facts” that connect Kabila to the M23 armed organization, which has seized control of multiple cities in the mineral-rich east, authorities have charged him with treason and war crimes.
Kabila, 53, has previously denied any affiliation with the insurgents but has not responded to the claims.
On Thursday, five senators voted against his treason prosecution, while nearly 90 senators supported it.
