Based on the Stephen King novel, Duvall portrayed Wendy, the wife of Jack Nicholson’s menacing hotel caretaker in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror masterpiece The Shining.
In a eulogy, King wrote: “I’m sorry Shelly Duvall is no longer with us. An amazing, gifted, and underutilized performer.”
In addition, she starred in movies such as Annie Hall, Popeye, Nashville, and 3 Women. She was also well-known for creating and hosting the adored children’s television program Faerie Tale Theatre in the 1980s.
“A dear friend and wonderful actress who played quirky/offbeat characters in some great films by Bob Altman,” was how British actor Malcolm McDowell put her.
And of course her outstanding performance in Kubrick’s The Shining,” he continued. Working with her at Faerie Tale Theatre was a pleasure.
According to actress Mia Farrow, she is “so good and always mesmerizing.”.
“Very sad to hear that the unique and truly wonderful actor Shelley Duvall has passed away,” Farrow wrote. She gives us a lot of truly memorable performances.”
