Colin Farrell has disclosed how his portrayal in Ballad of a Small Player was influenced by his previous battles with addiction.
The 49-year-old Irish actor talked candidly about his preparation for playing gambling addict Lord Doyle in Edward Berger’s drama Ballad of a Small Player at the San Sebastián Film Festival.
“It’s pretty well-chronicled now my history with addiction, but I don’t think you have to be an addict to play an addict,” Farrell stated during the press conference for the upcoming movie. I thought that starting with [Doyle’s] internal pull was a great idea.
“He is someone who doesn’t believe in his own worth, who is very self-centered to the point of being despicable,” he continued, referring to his persona.
