According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake of a magnitude of 6.6 occurred on Tuesday close to Lae, Papua New Guinea’s second-largest city.
A “very huge” earthquake was felt, city police spokesman Mildred Ongige told Reuters over the phone. “It was a few minutes ago so we have no further details of damage but we are concerned,” she said.
Local reports of damage were not immediately available.
According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and no tsunami warning was issued.
