An effort to forcefully marry a young girl in the Kot Momin neighborhood of Bahawalpur, Punjab, has been successfully thwarted by the police.
As part of the operation, the authorities detained three people, including the groom.
The child is about 13 years old, and the groom is 24, according to the authorities.
The Marriage Act is the basis for the charges brought against the detained people.
Even though Pakistan has a Child Marriage Act, its enforcement is lax, which contributes to the alarmingly high number of forced weddings of minors that occur there.
