Concerned about the recently passed 26th Constitutional Amendment, United Nations Human Rights chief Volker Turk said it was “adopted hastily and without broad consultation and debate.”
After weeks of political wrangling and discussions, the ruling coalition was able to approve the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment bill, giving the parliament the authority to choose the next Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) from among the top three Supreme Court justices.
Turk claimed that “hurriedly adopted” reforms will “seriously undermine the independence of the judiciary” in a post on X (previously Twitter).
