Holder stood by Walz during 2024 vetting process
Former Attorney General Eric Holder publicly defended the Democratic Party’s review of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz during the 2024 election. Holder, a close ally of Barack Obama, helped vet possible vice presidential picks for Kamala Harris.
In an October 2024 interview, Holder said the vetting team missed nothing of substance. He described Walz as genuine and well qualified. Holder said his record as governor and his personal chemistry with Harris helped move him up the list.
Minnesota rocked by massive fraud investigation
Soon after those comments, Minnesota was hit by a wide ranging fraud scandal. Prosecutors allege that public funds were stolen through meal programs, housing aid, daycare centers, and Medicaid services.
Investigators estimate losses could reach nine billion dollars. Dozens of people have been charged so far. Many cases involve organizations that received state funding.
Walz acknowledged accountability as governor. He also said Republicans and the Trump administration inflated the numbers for political reasons. He has refused calls to resign, saying he will not step down.
Vetting questions return after scandal explodes
Holder later said the fraud investigation was known during the vetting process. Sources familiar with the review said state agencies were already in contact with federal investigators before the campaign.
Those sources said the issue was not viewed as disqualifying. Holder insisted his team was not surprised by later developments. He said Walz’s past misstatements were reviewed and addressed at the time.
Republicans disagreed. They pointed to earlier controversies, including Walz’s handling of the 2020 riots and comments about his military service. These issues gained attention as Walz entered the national spotlight.
Political pressure continues to build
As investigations expanded, criticism intensified. Vice President JD Vance called for Walz to resign. He said the governor either knew about the fraud or ignored clear warning signs.
Federal law enforcement increased activity in Minneapolis as cases moved forward. Tensions rose further after a fatal incident involving immigration officers in January. The shooting sparked sharp political backlash and renewed debate over leadership in the state.
