Six teenage girls were arrested after two incidents of anti social behaviour in south west London. Police say the events were linked to online trends that encouraged the crowd to gather and act out.
On Tuesday, around 100 officers were called to Clapham High Street after reports of disorder. Young people tried to enter shops and a restaurant. Some lit fires and set off fireworks on nearby Clapham Common.
Several officers were assaulted during the incident. One officer suffered an injury while making an arrest. Police detained three girls following the violence.
Arrests and Legal Action
A 17 year old and two girls aged 13 were arrested on suspicion of assaulting emergency workers. The 17 year old has been charged and released on bail. The younger girls also received bail and will return to face further action if required.
Another incident on Saturday led to three more arrests. Those girls face charges related to theft and assault after similar anti social behaviour involving a large group.
Police confirmed that more arrests may follow. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and body worn cameras to identify others involved.
Local Authorities React
Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan described the situation as appalling. He said those responsible will face full legal consequences.
Eyewitness Accounts and Local Impact
Local residents said the situation came as a shock. One witness, Christine, said the heavy police presence felt unusual and intimidating, especially while she was with her baby.
Business owners also reported disruption. Staff at a local chicken shop said large groups entered the store and acted aggressively, forcing them to close early. Nearby restaurants and food outlets also reported similar issues.
Workers said many of the disturbances targeted food businesses rather than clothing shops. A nearby McDonald’s reported food theft during the chaos.
One worker said a large group moved between stores, and some clashes broke out when police arrived.
Ongoing Investigation
Police continue to investigate both incidents. They warned that individuals who took part may still face arrest. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
