South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has selected Darline Graham Nordone to temporarily replace her late brother, US Senator Lindsey Graham, following his death.
Nordone will serve the remaining period of Graham’s Senate term, which ends in 2027. She was chosen after Graham died from an aortic dissection linked to cardiovascular disease at the age of 71.
McMaster announced the decision on Monday and described Nordone as Lindsey Graham’s “darling little sister.” He said she would continue her brother’s work and honor his legacy in the Senate.
A Close Bond Between Lindsey Graham and His Sister
Darline Graham Nordone shared a strong relationship with her brother throughout their lives. The siblings faced a difficult childhood after losing both parents within 15 months.
At the time, Lindsey Graham was 22 years old, while Darline was only 13. After their parents’ deaths, Graham took responsibility for his younger sister and later legally adopted her.
While Graham studied law and served in the US Air Force, Nordone stayed connected with him and remained close to her brother. Their relationship continued for decades.
Nordone Says She Will Honor Her Brother’s Legacy
After accepting the appointment, Nordone said she was honored to take on the role.
“Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him,” she said.
She added that she believed this was what her brother would have wanted and promised to respect his work in Washington.
President Donald Trump and other officials supported Nordone’s appointment, saying it would be a tribute to the late senator, who never married and had no children.
Family Members Often Replace Deceased Lawmakers
The appointment follows a long tradition in American politics where family members sometimes step in to complete a lawmaker’s term after their death.
According to records from the US House of Representatives, dozens of family members have replaced deceased lawmakers in Congress. Many cases involved widows taking over their late husbands’ seats.
Nordone’s appointment allows South Carolina to maintain representation in the Senate until the next election cycle.
Lindsey Graham’s Political Career and Death
Lindsey Graham served as a Republican senator from South Carolina and had been preparing for re-election in November. He had already secured the Republican Party’s nomination before his death.
A preliminary report from the Washington DC medical examiner stated that Graham died because of an aortic dissection caused by cardiovascular disease.
