Ghanaian social media influencer Frederick Kumi, popularly known online as Abu Trica, has been extradited to the United States to face charges linked to an alleged romance scam worth more than $8 million.
US authorities accuse Kumi of targeting elderly Americans through online platforms and using fake identities to build relationships with victims. Kumi has denied all allegations against him.
If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison for charges related to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
Allegations of Using AI to Create Fake Identities
Prosecutors claim Kumi used artificial intelligence tools to create false online profiles. Through these profiles, he allegedly contacted victims on social media and dating websites.
Investigators say the scammers gained victims’ trust through regular conversations and emotional connections. After building relationships, they allegedly requested money or valuable items by making false claims about emergencies, medical expenses, travel costs, or investment opportunities.
Authorities believe the money and valuables were transferred to other individuals involved in the alleged operation in both the United States and Ghana.
Luxury Lifestyle Raised Questions Online
Kumi attracted attention because of his expensive lifestyle shared on social media. He regularly posted images showing luxury cars, large amounts of cash, and high value properties.
His online posts raised questions about how he earned his income. At the time, he had more than 100,000 followers on Instagram.
US investigators later connected his online activities to the alleged fraud scheme.
Dispute Over Extradition Process in Ghana
Kumi’s lawyer, Oliver Barker Vormawor, argued that Ghanaian authorities moved forward with the extradition before the court completed its review.
The lawyer claimed the decision created serious legal concerns and questioned whether proper judicial procedures were followed.
However, Ghana’s government rejected these claims. Justice Minister and Attorney General Dominic Ayeni said the extradition followed the legal process.
Ayeni stated that the court had already dismissed Kumi’s legal application, allowing authorities to obtain a surrender warrant and proceed with the extradition.
Arrest Followed Joint Ghana US Investigation
Kumi, who comes from Swedru in southern Ghana, was arrested last year during a joint operation involving Ghanaian and US authorities.
Officials have also reported different information about his age. His lawyer says Kumi is 28 years old, while US prosecutors list him as 31.
The case will now continue in the United States, where Kumi will face trial over the alleged online fraud charges.
