Health authorities are monitoring several British nationals after a hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius. The situation has triggered international contact tracing and medical support across multiple countries. Officials say the public risk remains low.
Timeline of Exposure on the Cruise
A group of about 30 passengers from around a dozen countries traveled on the ship, including seven British citizens.
They left the vessel on 24 April at St Helena in the south Atlantic. At that time, no confirmed infection had been reported.
The first confirmed case was identified on 4 May. By then, several passengers had already left the ship and traveled onward.
Current Health Situation of British Nationals
Health officials have provided updates on the British passengers linked to the cruise.
- Three British nationals have confirmed or suspected hantavirus infection
One is receiving treatment in the Netherlands - One is located on Tristan da Cunha and is under medical care
- Four British passengers remain on St Helena
- Two British passengers have returned to the United Kingdom
They have no symptoms and are staying in isolation at home as a precaution - One British passenger has not yet been located
Authorities are continuing efforts to trace this individual

This includes authorities in Switzerland and the Netherlands.The World Health Organization described the situation as serious but stressed that the risk to the wider public remains low. Officials also clarified that this event is not comparable to a Covid 19 type pandemic.
