Senate Lockdown After Gunfire Reports
The Philippine Senate went into lockdown after gunshots were heard inside the building in Manila. Security forces quickly moved in and secured the area. Officials confirmed that no one suffered injuries.
Military units and police entered the Senate complex soon after the incident. Officers surrounded the building and restricted movement inside and outside.
Senator Dela Rosa Under Protection
Senator Ronald Dela Rosa remained inside the Senate during the lockdown. Authorities confirmed he stayed safe under security protection.
Earlier, he said he believed an arrest attempt was close. He also urged supporters to act if needed. Officials later stated he is secure and under guard.
ICC Allegations and Political Pressure
The International Criminal Court has accused Dela Rosa of involvement in killings during his time as police chief. These allegations relate to the anti drug campaign under former president Rodrigo Duterte, where thousands died.
Duterte has already been detained in The Hague since March 2025.
Protesters gathered outside the Senate and demanded that authorities detain Dela Rosa as well. They called for him to face trial along with Duterte.
Security Response and Government Statement
Police commandos entered the Senate building as tensions increased. Riot police secured the perimeter and controlled access points.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the president ordered strict protection for all senators. He also confirmed that Dela Rosa remains safe with security personnel.
Lawyers for Dela Rosa have asked the Supreme Court to stop any extradition process.
