Football fans across England and Wales will be able to enjoy England’s crucial World Cup clash against Mexico without worrying about pubs closing early. The government has confirmed that licensed venues can remain open until 5:00am on Monday, giving supporters enough time to watch the entire match.
The round of 16 fixture takes place in Mexico City and kicks off at 1:00am UK time. Since the game is expected to finish after 3:00am, the extended opening hours mean fans can stay at their local pub until the final whistle.
Government Reverses Earlier Decision
Earlier in the day, ministers had indicated they would not extend licensing hours beyond the rules already announced for the tournament. However, the government later changed its position.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer confirmed that pubs would now be allowed to remain open until 5:00am. He described the move as positive news for both football supporters and businesses.
He said the decision would allow fans to enjoy England’s match together instead of leaving before the game ends.
Pubs and Hospitality Industry Welcome the Move
The hospitality industry quickly welcomed the announcement. Pub owners believe the decision will create a better atmosphere for supporters while helping businesses attract more customers during one of the biggest sporting events of the year.
Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, said local pubs are the perfect place for fans to watch England play.
Michael Kill, chief executive of the Night Time Industries Association, also praised the decision. He said the extended opening hours would provide an important boost for pubs and other late night venues.
Hundreds of Greene King Pubs to Stay Open
Greene King confirmed that more than 600 of its pubs across England will stay open for the match. The extended hours will apply to venues in cities including Birmingham, Bristol, London, Carlisle, Liverpool, and Folkestone.
The company expects thousands of supporters to gather and watch the game together throughout the night.
Previous Licensing Rules
Before the latest announcement, the government had already approved temporary licensing extensions during the World Cup.
Pubs could remain open until 1:00am for matches kicking off between 5:00pm and 9:00pm. They could also stay open until 2:00am for games beginning between 9:00pm and 10:00pm.
Those changes followed a six week public consultation that started in December.
Under normal rules, individual pubs must apply to their local council if they want permission to stay open later than their licensed hours. Applications usually need to be submitted at least five working days in advance.
Fans Can Enjoy the Full Match
The latest decision removes that concern for England’s upcoming match against Mexico. Supporters can now stay in pubs until 5:00am, creating a better matchday experience while giving hospitality businesses an opportunity to benefit from increased customer numbers.
If England progresses further in the tournament, similar licensing decisions could be considered for future late night fixtures.
