Perth court appearance and charges
Australian author Craig Silvey, 43, has pleaded guilty to two charges linked to child exploitation material. Police arrested him in January after a raid at his home in Perth, Western Australia, where they seized multiple electronic devices.
During the hearing on Tuesday, Silvey admitted to offences connected to material said to have been produced in January. Authorities dropped two additional charges, including one linked to alleged material from 2022. The case will return to court in July, and his bail remains in place.
Response and ongoing legal process
Silvey did not speak to reporters outside the court after the hearing. The investigation and legal proceedings are still ongoing, with further court action expected later this year.
Impact on books and public reaction
Following his arrest, publishers, retailers, and schools began removing his books from circulation. Several education departments in Western Australia and Victoria also removed his titles from reading lists.
His well known works, including Jasper Jones, Runt, and Rhubarb, were among those affected.
