DHAKA: At least five journalists were dismissed after Bangladeshi students stormed the offices of a television station’s investor on Tuesday, accusing it of spreading “propaganda.”
Participating in the August revolution that overthrew Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, whose administration was regarded as one of the worst for media freedom, were the students.
On December 17, Hasnat Abdullah, the organizer of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement, escorted 15 to 20 students to the City Group offices, which are the investors in Somoy Television.
“Somoy Television was spreading propaganda, twisting my comments, and accommodating the views of a fallen political party,” Hasnat told the AFP news agency.
“We are staunch supporters of press freedom, but the press must remain unbiased,” Hasnat stated, adding that he did not see any problems.
