Two days after Senator Shibli Faraz was removed from office, the Senate Secretariat appointed him to a five-member inquiry committee, drawing criticism.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) banned Faraz on August 5 after he was found guilty in the May 9 riots case by the Anti-Terrorism Court in Faisalabad, according to official notifications. In accordance with Article 63 of the Constitution, the Senate Secretariat subsequently announced that the opposition leader post was empty.
Faraz was named as one of the members of an inquiry committee that the secretariat formed on August 7 to look into a visa case against the Senate’s Joint Secretary. The committee is led by Senator Saleem Mandviwala and consists of Senate Deputy Secretary Muhammad Azam, Anusha Rehman, and Samina Mumtaz Zehri.
