In the swift trial of a crime that triggered nationwide outcry over a lack of safety for women, an Indian police volunteer was found guilty on Saturday of raping and killing a junior doctor at a hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata.
On August 9, the woman’s body was discovered in a classroom at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, which is run by the state. To demand justice for her and improved security at public hospitals, other medical professionals took weeks off from work.
Sanjay Roy, the defendant, claimed in November that he was “completely innocent” and that he was being set up.
It was not immediately possible to get in touch with Roy’s attorneys to comment on the decision. They had contended that the results from the forensic testing and the inquiry included obvious inconsistencies.
