According to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Canada will only engage in trade and security negotiations with President Donald Trump “on our terms” and believes that his nation deserves respect from the US.
Carney said he would only travel to Washington when there was a “serious discussion to be had” that respected Canada’s sovereignty in an exclusive interview with the press as the polls were closing.
The White House reaffirmed Tuesday the US president’s repeated calls to make Canada the “51st state” of America since his reelection to the presidency.
“President Trump’s plan to make Canada America’s beloved 51st state is unaffected by the election,” stated White House deputy spokesperson Anna Kelly.
