The remains of people who lived at Pueblo Bonito in the Chaco Canyon of New Mexico a thousand years ago have yielded DNA that is being used to connect current members of a Pueblo tribe to this historic site, which is revered by Indigenous peoples for its unique architecture and holy significance.
In addition to the DNA recently collected from 13 current members of the Picuris Pueblo tribe and the tooth and bone remains of 16 individuals who lived at the tribe’s home site 500–1,500 years ago, researchers also looked at data on ancient DNA previously collected from human remains at Pueblo Bonito.
They discovered a strong genetic link between the ancient residents of Pueblo Bonito and the modern Picuris Pueblo people.
When claiming cultural ties and ancestral claims, indigenous communities frequently face obstacles.
