According to a government document and an industry source, India has accelerated the start date of four hydroelectric projects that are currently under development in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) region by months after suspending a water-sharing agreement with Pakistan that had hindered progress.
Another indication that India is attempting to capitalize on its unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 in the wake of a deadly attack in Kashmir last month is the revised schedule for the projects, whose construction is generally opposed by Pakistan due to concerns that it would result in less water downstream.
India has taken a number of diplomatic actions after claiming that two of the “terrorists” who killed 26 individuals at a well-known tourist destination in Kashmir on April 22 were from Pakistan.
