Days after suspending a crucial water pact with Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Tuesday that water from India that has previously flowed across borders will be stopped.
In an address in New Delhi, Modi declared, “India’s water used to go outside, now it will flow for India.” “India´s water will be stopped for India´s interests, and it will he utilised for India.”
Pakistan has issued a warning that there would be “an act of war” if its rivers were altered.
Although Modi made no specific mention of Islamabad, his remarks followed New Delhi’s suspension of its portion of the 1960 IWT, which regulates water vital to Pakistan’s agriculture and consumption.
