A news agency close to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) said Monday that the militant group, which has been fighting the Turkish government for over 40 years, has made the decision to disband and cease its violent campaign.
With Kurdish troops linked with US forces in neighboring Syria, the PKK decision is expected to have far-reaching political and security ramifications for the area.
In response to a February request for disbandment by its imprisoned leader Abdullah Ocalan, the PKK conducted a congress last week in northern Iraq, and the Firat news agency reported what it claimed was the concluding statement of the conference.
“The 12th PKK Congress has resolved to disband the PKK’s armed struggle strategy and dissolve its organizational structure.
