BENGALURU: Kerala’s state government reported that India’s coast guard rushed Monday to contain an oil spill from a container ship carrying dangerous cargo that sank off the southern coast the previous day.
All 24 crew members were saved when the Liberian-flagged MSC ELSA 3, a freighter measuring 184 meters [603 feet], went down off the coast of Kerala on Sunday.
It was transporting 640 containers, 12 of which contained calcium carbide, a material used to make steel and fertilizer, and 13 of which had dangerous goods. About 370 tonnes of oil and petrol were also on board the ship.
Kerala’s government released a statement stating that “the Coast Guard is taking action to prevent the spread of oil using two ships.”
