ISLAMABAD: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) is deeply concerned about the Council of Islamic Ideology’s (CII) decision to reject the law that President Asif Ali Zardari just signed into law, which forbids child marriage.
The HRCP blasted the CII’s attempt to block the bill in a statement released on Friday, describing it as an essential step to shield children, especially girls, from abuse and exploitation.
The commission stated that the law establishes a “long-overdue legal standard by criminalizing child marriage,” adding that it is “undermining the rights of every child to frame child protection as incompatible with religion.”
